How to Clean Chemical Spills

FAST-ACT is designed for liquid and vapor chemical releases, but the chemicals it attacks does not need to be limited to what we traditionally think of as a chemical spill. Toxic and noxious chemicals can come from a variety of sources such as waste water, decomposition, household chemicals, and animals.

Since FAST-ACT can be applied to liquid spill or vapor release enabling Emergency Responders to utilize one system when faced with a wide variety of known or unknown chemical hazards it can be used to help with cleanup in some pretty unusual circumstances. We wanted to share a few of the more interesting situations where FAST-ACT has been used:

Dead bodies in vehicles

Unfortunately, people sometimes die in their vehicles. This can be accidental or intentional, but either way the odors of decomposition need to be addressed. FAST-ACT Pressurized Cylinders have been used to decontaminate the odors. By dispensing FAST-ACT through this manner, the powder disseminates quickly and can flood the entire enclosed space quickly and rapidly. In addition to knocking down the odors, the FAST-ACT powder helps soak up decomposition fluid. This is probably the most unfortunate use of the product, but we are happy that this is a tool that can make this cleanup process easier for the responders.

Skunks in crawl spaces

Skunk odors are difficult to mitigate even for restoration contractors. We often get calls about animals dying in the crawl spaces below people's homes. An animal crawl in there, dies, and the odors become strong, but eventually dissipate. When it comes to a skunk, the odor can last and last. The thiol based odor of skunk spray can linger in the air for a long time and is difficult to remove. FAST-ACT Pressurized Cylinders can be used to fog the air space of the crawl space and since FAST-ACT is made of safe metal oxides, it can be left in place to capture and neutralize the odors.

Chemicals in waste water cleanup

After natural disasters such as floods, teams of emergency responders and restoration contractors come together to help communities get back to normal. Waste water can be contaminated with a variety of pollutants, including chemicals. FAST-ACT powder has been used to soak up residual contaminated chemicals and waters to make the jobsite safer.

Odors in warehouses

Large open air spaces like a warehouse can sometimes be difficult to air out after a chemical release or odor event. FAST-ACT can be fogged into the air to help knock down the odors. This can be common after chemical fires or even the combustion of synthetic materials. FAST-ACT makes quick work of this smelly situation.

Illegal disposal of household chemicals

Some of the more common uses of FAST-ACT involve people improperly disposing household chemicals into dumpsters. When these products packages fail and the liquids mix together, some very dangerous chemical concoctions can form and release vapors. First Responders arrive on scene and have no idea what the starting chemicals are or what they have formed. This is a perfect daily occurrence type of use of FAST-ACT. A FAST-ACT cylinder can be deployed to knock down the vapors and contain and/or neutralize the liquid chemicals. These are particularly dangerous situations as illegal disposal of household chemicals into dumpster often occurs in more populated and urban areas where unsuspecting people may encounter an incident.

Decontamination of shipping containers

FAST-ACT has been used to mitigate odors in shipping containers overseas. Containers that have chemical package failures or even intentional fumigants can be hard to completely clear out and neutralize. FAST-ACT can be quickly deployed to neutralize a variety of chemical compounds and flood the void spaces in filled or empty shipping containers.

How to Clean Chemical Spills

These are just a few of the common, but not often thought of, uses for FAST-ACT. If you have used FAST-ACT in an unusual circumstance, we would love to hear about it.

How do you get Musty Smell out of Towels

How do you get Musty Smell out of Towels

Towels are one of the most important pieces of laundry to keep clean and dry. Damp towels are vulnerable to bacterial growth, which causes that "musty" or "sour" smell. (Gross but true: That unpleasant odor is the smell of bacteria breeding.)

According to Steve Boorstein, a coauthor of The Clothing Doctor's 99 Secrets of Cleaning and Clothing Care, you can retard the growth of bacteria with a holistic approach to the problem. He recommends following these five steps to keep towels smelling fresh.

1. Scrub diligently with soap in the shower or bath, especially sweat "hot spots," such as the feet, the underarms, and the groin. "Good hygiene in the shower is critical," says Boorstein. "Some people―including most kids―don't wash thoroughly when bathing. Any bacteria from sweat and body oils that isn't washed away gets transferred to your towel."

2. Always hang up a towel after using it. A rack is ideal for airing out the maximum amount of surface area. Don't throw a damp towel―whether it has been used in the kitchen or the bathroom―on the floor or in a hamper to dry. The residual buildup of bacteria only worsens if a damp towel doesn't dry completely between uses.

3. Make sure your washing machine itself is sanitary. "People shed about 1 billion dead skin cells every day, much of which ends up in your clothes, towels, and washing machine," says Boorstein. "Before washing your towels, do your whites, if you use bleach. Or run an empty load with ¼ cup bleach to disinfect the interior."

4. Perform some heavy-duty cleaning on your towels. Boorstein recommends washing small loads of no more than three towels in hot water on the longest setting. Use OdorKlenz Laundry Additive to remove musty odors from towels for good. Remove them from the warm environment of the washing machine quickly or bacteria will start breeding within one to two hours. And be sure to dry towels completely.

If a towel continues to have a smell, it means that bacteria are still in your machine or on your towel. Run the washing machine again with bleach, or wash the towel a second time to remove the stubborn bacteria.

5. Wash your towels frequently. Follow the steps above, says Boorstein, and use a bath towel no more than three times between washings

Best Air Purifier For Cooking Odors

Best Air Purifier For Cooking Odors

Best Air Purifier For Cooking Odors

One of the joys of cooking is the aromas foods release while they are cooking. The delicious smells of baking cookies, soup on the stove or chicken in the oven make our mouths water and awakens our appetite. But when food aromas linger, they can turn into cooking odors that are not so pleasant to smell.

And there is another problem with cooking. If you use a gas stove, the open flame of the lit burner during cooking will release a whole group of toxic chemicals known as “combustion by-products.” While these chemicals have little odor, many of the by-products of burning natural gas can cause cancer and produce other serious health effects, and can even be deadly.

There are many products available that claim to reduce cooking odors, but many of these do so by adding more pollutants to the air rather than removing them. In particular don't use candles or sprays with scents, which have toxic ingredients of their own.

Fortunately, there are a number of strategies we can use to prevent or remove unpleasant cooking odors, eliminate harmful combustion by-products, and keep our kitchens fresh and clean.

Not all foods create lingering cooking odors. The problem foods are fried foods and spicy foods. If you eat more salads, beans, slow-roasted meats, nuts and seeds, and other whole foods, you will create fewer odors in the first place.

You can also cook foods with lingering odors outdoors. It's easy to set up an electric skillet or hotplate on a patio and let cooking odors drift away on outdoor breezes.

A good exhaust fan, positioned correctly in your kitchen, is your first line of defense against unwanted cooking smells. You exhaust fan will trap grease particles and pull cooking odors and combustion by-products up and out of the house within seconds of being created during the cooking process. In fact, they are standard equipment in modern homes expressly for this purpose.

You'll also want to change or wash the air filters on your exhaust fan on regular bases-especially after a fragrant meal. Some reusable filters can even be placed in the dishwasher. It's worth taking a look at you exhaust fan and learning where the filter is, how to remove and replace it, and how to clean it.

If you are cooking with gas consider buying a carbon monoxide meter, especially if you are not using your exhaust fan or don't have one. If the reading shows higher-than-recommended carbon monoxide levels, it's time to use your exhaust fan or figure out alternative ventilation.
If you don't have and exhaust fan and cannot install one, install a small window fan and run it on “exhaust” every time you cook. This will pull the air out of the kitchen and cooking odors will tag along. Even just opening a window helps.
